Team engagement gives a stronger delivery by defining and maximising the objective

A couple of weeks ago we brought a group of managers together within the business we were working with, to help them to grasp the importance and effectiveness of Project Management – well that’s a subject in itself, but the overriding learning that came out of this short session was just how important it is to take a little time together to improve communication and build the team spirit.

Our approach
Firstly, get the team together to buy into the project and identify “why we are doing it”

This generated an opening discussion, which lead to the development of the project plan.

Our next task was to explain the benefits of a project based approach, as it should always define the objective in terms of its benefit

• Every project plan should begin with an explanation of the business / customer value (benefits) that the project is intended to deliver.
• Always wherever possible define the Return on Investment (ROI)

Point is - if there is no discernible benefit, why are you doing the project?

We flushed out not only the task in hand, but also how people felt about tackling it and quickly instigated a discussion on what had gone on in the past, which also needed to be addressed in terms of outcome and learnings.

The meeting ended in a very positive way, with people having a much greater understanding of their own role and value in terms of ‘team work’ and implementation. The realisation that a well thought out project actually saves time and frustration and therefore makes everyone more engaged and efficient.

So what did we achieve?
• Clarity
• Understanding
• Mutual respect
• Remove ‘blame’
• Positive team spirit with a willingness to achieve

We’re often amazed how these small meetings contribute to the over task in hand. Business growth is determined by many factors and objectives, but people are your biggest asset!
